AHA 2013 STEMI Guidelines

Updates from the newly released (it’s not even 2013 yet!) 2013 AHA STEMI management guidelines have been added to the Management of Acute Coronary Syndromes and Reperfusion Therapy pages in the Cardiovascular Disorders section.

Hybrid resuscitation

A short section on th technique of hybrid resuscitation of hypovolaemia has been added to the Treatment of Hypovolaemia page in the Resuscitation section.

Management of severe limb injuries

Sections describing the use of arterial tourniquets and pseudo coagulation powders in the managment of severe limb trauma have been added to the Management of fractures and dislocations page in the Bone and Joint Disorders section

Blast injury

Updates have been made to the Blast injury part of the Mechanisms of Injury page in the Trauma section.

Pelvic trauma management update

Some new information has been added to the Pelvic Trauma page in the Trauma section regarding pelvic binding and angiography in the management of pelvic fractures.

Community acquired pneumonia restructure

The Respiratory disease subsection in the Respiratory disorders section has been reorganised to break the topic down to more easily managed pages. New pages on Bronchitis, Pneumonia scoring systems and Pneumonia management have been created.

Diabetic emergencies

The Diabetic emergencies subsection in the Endocrinology section has been reorganised to break down the topic to more easily managed pages. New pages on Insulin therapy, Oral hypoglycaemic agents and The diabetic with unstable sugars have been created.

12 new images added

The following new images have been added to the relevant pages: Vessels of the head and neck, Muscles of the head and neck, Sites of endometriosis, Male urinary catheterisation, Female urinary catheterisation, Muscles of the arm and forearm, Testicular anatomy, Stomach anatomy, Effects of adrenaline, Diabetic retinopathy, Types of colon carcinomas and ECG lead positioning.

Emergency resuscitative thoracotomy

Extensive revision and additions to the Emergency Department Thoracotomy page in the Trauma section have been made following the London Trauma Conference Thoracotomy Masterclass.

Criteria for endotracheal extubation

An expanded list of criteria for endotracheal extubation in patients who are being actively treated has been added to the Endotracheal extubation page in the Resuscitation section.

High output cardiac failure

Some tips on how to differentiate high output cardiac failure from low output failure have been added to the Assessment of Cardiac Failure page in the Cardiovascular Disorders section.

Pregnancy related additions

The following topics have been added to the Pregnancy and Labour & delivery pages in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology section: Fertilisation and implantation; Endocrine changes in pregnancy; and Deciding where delivery should take place.

Cardiac arrest additions

Following the recent London Cardiac Arrest Symposium, multiple updates and additions have been made to the following areas:  Sudden cardiac death, Therapeutic hypothermia in cardiac arrest, US in cardiac arrest, Mechanical chest compression devices, Role of PCI post arrest.

Differentiating inferior STEMI from pericarditis

Additional highly sensitive and specific criteria for differentiating inferior STEMI from pericarditis and early repolarisation phenomenon have been added to the ECG in Acute Coronary Syndromes and Pericarditis pages in the Cardiovascular Disorders section.

Garden IV Subcapital NOF fracture

Xrays of a Garden IV subcapital NOF fracture have been added to the Femoral fractures page in the Bone and Joint Disorders section. These images illustrate the importance of disruption to Shenton’s line and the lateral view in making the diagnosis.
